Sankranthi / Pongal Celebration – 2024

Date: 11-01-2024
Sankranthi / Pongal is an important festival with cultural and mythological importance in Hindu mythology. It is one of the main festivals of Southern India, especially Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Marking the importance of good harvest crops like turmeric, rice, sugarcane, wheat, etc., it is a festival of joy, peace, and prosperity. It is a celebration to thank the Sun, Mother Nature and the various farm animals that help to contribute to a bountiful harvest. Celebrated over four days, Pongal also marks the beginning of the Tamil month called Thai, which is considered an auspicious month. It usually falls on the 14th or 15th of January each year. Makar Sankranti / Pongal is a festival to celebrate the harvesting of crops by farmers and to mark to the onset of Spring season. The sun moves from the south to the north starting the Uttarayan period which is considered very auspicious.
RajaRajeswari Medical College and Hospital celebrated Sankranthi / Pongal with lots of fervor and ecstasy. Customarily pongal (Sweet dish made with the combination of rice and jaggery) was prepared by the staff on Chula (a traditional stove burnt with wood). Devotional puja was also done. The game “uriyadi” (a pot game played in tamil nadu) was also conducted with some cultural programs. The game’s organizers would blindfold the participants and make them stand a distance away from the pot. The participant would be prevented from reaching the hanging pot by the nearby population. However, the blindfolded competitors must still approach the pot and break it with the provided long sticks. Sweet / Kara pongal with yellu bella were distributed to all.
May this harvest festival fill your life with joy and prosperity. ‘Happy Sankranthi’ , ‘Happy Pongal’ to all. May the sweetness of overflowing milk of sugarcane fill your life with happiness and prosperity.
